  • Western Maryland Rail Trails in MarylandKeep it Interesting
The quickest death to any fitness resolution is boredom. We like doing things that are fun and work with our clients to make it interesting. There is also the additional benefit; your muscles like it too! Also, consider outdoor activities and other things you can do to stay fit outside of the gym. Try new things or do activities that make you happy, then incorporate them into your routine. That way, fitness is fun, and you look forward to it.
  • You Are What You Eat (And Drink)
Everything you consume counts. Every calorie, whether from food or beverages affects your fitness. Try to choose nutrient dense, low-calorie, high volume foods. Remember not all calories are created equal! Avoid empty calories and think about everything you put past your lips.
  • Pay Attention to Your Body
We never promote the “no pain, no gain” philosophy. We always recommend you take cues from what is going on with your body. If running bothers your knees, chose another form of activity. Are you feeling run down with a cold? Allow your body to rest. Don’t sabotage your progress with an injury or end up completely out with a serious illness.

Make a playlist of your favorite tunes. Space out high energy songs for unexpected motivation throughout your workout. Working out will fly by when you move and sweat along to your favorite songs.
  • Make Mini and Manageable Goals
Need to lose 50 pounds? New to running but want to run a 5k, 10K or marathon? Make mini goals, like losing the first five pounds or running a mile without stopping, on the way to your big goal. Check off each goal as you go and be proud of the progress you have made thus far.
  • Laugh, a Lot!
Some researchers have shown that 15 minutes of hearty laughter can burn upwards of 40 calories! So, laugh often, every little bit helps. Also, try not to take yourself too seriously. Allow yourself to laugh at you. it releases stress and tension, two major roadblocks that prevent you from attaining your goals.
  • Avoid Personal Ultimatums
Never say never. It’s that simple. You will be sure to fail if you burden yourself with unmanageable ultimatums. Instead of swearing off sugar for the rest of your life, then beating yourself up if you imbibe, understand that life is all about giving and taking.

Take moments every day to tell yourself how amazing you are! Some people begin the day with encouraging meditation. Or, take try mini-moments throughout the day and focus on your breathing. Never underestimate the power of positivity.
  • Be Patient and Forgiving
No one is perfect all the time. Avoid placing added pressures on yourself. Did you mindless eat a whole bag of chips or M&M’s? Skip the gym because you were exhausted? It is ok. Think of every moment as an opportunity for positive change. Forgive yourself and move on.
  • Enlist Encouraging Support
Accountability is essential for many people when making your fitness resolution last. Enlist a workout buddy. Hire a personal trainer. These folks not only motivate you but keep you honest.
  • Keep a Fitness Journal
A journal has two benefits. It serves as a fitness and food tracker. But, it also helps to write down how you are feeling. Sad? Frustrated? Happy or proud? Reflect and write it down. This form of self-therapy serves an excellent tool.
  • Employ Modern Technology
There are a variety of free fitness apps that you can download. Or, invest in a wearable fitness tracker. These devices count your steps for the day, how many calories you’ve consumed and burned. You may be able to connect with other fitness buddies as a bit of friendly competition.
  • Treat Yourself
When you reach a mini-goal, recognize that victory and treat yourself! Maybe a new gym outfit, or a bubble bath or a relaxing sit in the sauna or a massage. Gone are the days you reward yourself with food. And, you don’t have to spend money. However, find something you love and give it to you! You deserve it for all your hard work!
